SHORT WAVE DIATHERMY
Shortwave diathermy is a physiotherapy procedure whereby the internal tissues are heated. Heat causes reduction in the inflammation , pain , assists healing and increases extensibility.
This heat is different than the local hot fomentation done at home. Short wave diathermy uses electromagnetic waves and heats tissues upto 2.5 inches below the skin whereas in hot fomentation using hot bag, hot water, electric heating pads etc, heat hardly penetrates the skin and subcutaneous tissue.
Shortwave diathermy may be contraindicated in the following conditions:
Presence of cardiac pacemaker
Compromised heart function
Presence of metal in the body (like orthopaedic implants)
Decreased skin sensation or hypersensitive skin.
Pregnancy.
The intensity of the shortwave diathermy is adjusted to the minimum tolerable limit, but inspite of that, occasionally there may be blistering of sensitive skin. Please inform if the heat becomes intolerable during the procedure. Also do not insist on higher heat setting with intention of better effects.
